I know this world well–flew from Nellis for 3 years against all of these aircraft, targets, and all through this airspace. Overall, I think this documentary does what they set out to do, and I think it tells a good, but overly spectacular story of Red Flag.

There is no doubt that this film is filled with CGI aircraft effects, rigged explosions, questionable flying tactics, and conversation/terminology that you just don’t hear in a real training battle. I thought I would offer up the “why.” Much like Top Gun, movie producers quickly learned that the “real thing” doesn’t make for very engaging movie material. The real thing includes spread out formations, intense radar work, and shooting long range missiles from 30,000 feet, often without ever seeing the bandit with your own eyeballs. None of this shows too well on the big screen, so they have to “juice it up” by bringing all of the aircraft together into the same video frame, move the fight down to treetop level to convey the speed, and throw in a bunch of aileron rolls because they look cool (even though they don’t make the guy behind you spit out in front of you). The CGI fills in the gaps where the AF wouldn’t fly the requested maneuvers due to safety reasons.

As for the rigged explosions, there are a couple of reasons for this. The first is that the directors/producers wanted a “from the target” view of the bombs and bullets hitting, which I must say came out really cool. To film that actual aircraft’s ordnance hitting the target would have meant losing their camera and the film in the course of the explosion. The other thing is that the rigged explosings can be crafted to be especially “fiery” whereas real world bombs look like gray, soot-filled explosions and don’t cut the mustard for the Hollywood types.

The last thing that really varies from the real battle is the communications between pilots. To put it simply, it they were to use real terminology, only other military pilots that knew the lingo would be able to follow the action. The target audience would be totally lost. So they toss in some of the lingo, and then typically have the pilot “explain it” in english, all in the same radio call.

Does any of the above wreck the movie? Only if you’re really familiar with the way it really happens. My biggest complaint is that the CGI additions to the dogfight look fake. On the other hand, they look a lot better than they did in Air Force One, which I’m sure had a lot bigger special effects budget. For whatever reason, the CG folks just haven’t figured out tactical aviation yet, so I’d rather them just show me the real thing, even if it isn’t quite as spectacular.

A lot of the reviews state poor acting, poor CGI graphics, etc. For anyone that has not seen this before, this is not a hollywood movie. This is an actual account of Operation Red Flag. No actors, no special computer animations, other than those used by the wonderful men and women of the Air Force for flight review, as demonstrated in the video. This is a true tribute to the men and women who put everything on the line so that we can whine about “poor CGI graphics” or “bad acting”. This movie was designed as an insight into the main function of Nellis AFB and into the lives of USAF aviators and ground crew members for people like me who can’t serve there country, but desparately want to. Enjoy the show for what it is.

With ‘In search of the Trojan War’(another BBC DVD) Michael Wood made a thorough study of the age of heroes and legends. He tried to find historical facts only to end up with hypotheses.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Michael Wood: In Search of Myths and Heroes! Click Here

The same goes for ‘In Search of Myths and Heroes’ but this time Wood seems to have lost his panache that took a hold on us in The Trojan war DVD.Of course his journey through the Himalayas, through frozen and barren landscapes are able to take a hold on us, but we keep asking:’Is this all there is?’.

His quest for hidden realms since long gone, treasures and objects give the impression that he lost the intellectual spirit to investigate as thoroughly as in the Trojan War. Is the queen of Sheba a historical person? Maybe.Does Shangri-La exist? Could be. Does the Grail exist? He does not answer but takes us to a place in England where they keep a tiny wooden cup and say to every visitor that this is The Holy Grail. No further comment. Yes this is all there is.(From the intellectual point of view.)

Buy,Download, Or Stream Michael Wood: In Search of Myths and Heroes! Click Here

But the real value of ‘In Search of Myths and Heroes’ lies

in the fact that it is a very well directed documentary of several countries in the far East. In particular the hardship that Michael Wood and his companions have to suffer during their travel through icy cold mountain paths, make this DVD interesting enough for four stars.

Jason and the Golden Fleece, The Queen of Sheba, Shangri-la, Arthur. Michael Wood’s documentaries, as always provide a level of involvement in the myths and legends he brings to life as no other documentarians have done. His 250 mile trudge across the back side of the Himalayans in the company of Nepalese villagers is a case in point, and his arrival at the thousand year old fortress/retreat which stands as the best thesis for Shambala is monumental.

The photography is spectacular, the settings are both spectacular and gritty, and they are filmed in a manner that engages the viewer with the history, the indigent populace, and the meatiness of the legends.

You simply can’t take “The Adventures of Marco Polo” seriously…but as a light-hearted, glossy, tongue-in-cheek adventure, the film is great fun, from the same year as Warner’s “The Adventures of Robin Hood”.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Adventures of Marco Polo! Click Here

With producer Samuel Goldwyn’s biggest box office star, Gary Cooper, in the lead, as a drawling, skirt-chasing Polo, the film opens with an opulent, Hollywood version of 13th century Venice, then quickly moves to the steppes of central Asia, and finally the equally opulent court of Chinese Emperor Kublai Khan (George Barbier), where Cooper and his groaning comic relief (Ernest Truex) encounter Khan’s exotic, if not particularly Oriental-looking, daughter (Sigrid Gurie…who learns how to kiss from the obliging Polo), and Khan’s ruthless adviser, Ahmed (another terrific villainous portrayal by Basil Rathbone), who has designs on both China and Gurie.

Screenwriter Robert Sherwood tosses in a bit of history (the Chinese inventions of spaghetti and gunpowder, introduced to Polo by H.B. Warner, channeling his “Lost Horizon” persona), but clearly treats the storyline as farce, adding a feared (but henpecked) tribal chief (a heavily made-up Alan Hale), and his jealous wife (Binnie Barnes, who also falls under Polo’s spell). Also, watch for 17-year-old Lana Turner in a small but showy role as a most desirable Chinese handmaiden (this is the infamous film where Goldwyn’s makeup department burned off her eyebrows, permanently).

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Adventures of Marco Polo! Click Here

Directed by veteran director Archie Mayo (who lacked Michael Curtiz’ flair for epic period adventure), the action scenes are a bit flat, and Cooper’s climactic fight with Rathbone is somewhat disappointing (truthfully, he seems out-of-place confronting a swashbuckling villain). Certainly, 1938 audiences weren’t ‘buying’ Cooper as an Italian adventurer (it WAS a stretch!), and the film flopped, but if you’re in the mood for pure escapism, from Hollywood’s ‘Golden’ age, “The Adventures of Marco Polo” is certainly worth a look!

The problem with Marco Polo is that it couldn’t make up its mind whether it was a comedy or swashbuckler. Although I like him, Gary Cooper is miscast in this role (Ronald Colman or Robert Donat would have been better) and the screenplay needed to be more sober. George Barbier’s Kubla Khan (sp?) is better suited to a Paramount farce with W.C. Fields. Ernest Truex, with that whiny voice, is almost unbearable. Who comes out on top as usual?….Basil Rathbone. He is the only reason I would watch this film.

This is a very moving film about the clash of two radically different cultures. The young Jesuit priest, Father LaForgue, although very rigid in his belief system, sincerely wants to help the Native Americans by bringing them the Truth. But his message of paradise has no meaning for the Alogonquins, Hurons, and other tribes that he comes into contact with. They cannot understand why he has no woman. They fear him as a demon because he reads from books and makes strange signs (of the cross). He, in turn, believes they are living in darkness and must be saved. He is fearful of the vast forests where the devil reigns. There is a great deal of complexity in the character of Chomina, the Algonquin leader who fears the Black Robe but who feels honor bound to assist him. Father LaForgue is a tragic figure, so lonely and confused in the vast expanses of ‘New France’. Why is he here, so far from his mother’s comfortable drawing rooms? What does he hope to accomplish? The film is beautifully shot on location. A warning to the faint-hearted: there are some gruesome scenes in the film. Black Robe is a moving, balanced film with a profound spirituality.

An outstanding look at what happens when cultures collide. “Black Robe” tells the story of a 17th century French Jesuit missionary sent to the Canadian wilds to proselytize among the Huron Indians. Unfolding artfully and slowly, the film explores both the questionning of and committment to his faith encountered by the priest as he gets to know his Indian guides, their culture, and their spiritual beliefs. In the film, the priest’s character is juxtaposed to his young apprentice who falls in love with the daughter of their Algonquin guide and comes to a deep understanding and appreciation of their culture. Far from romanticizing and idealizing it’s Native American characters, however, “Black Robe” presents them fully as rich, varied, multi-faceted individuals capable of pettiness, wisdom, loyalty, kindness, atrocity, humor, close-mindedness, and love. Likewise, the priest retains his committment to Roman Catholicism and his confusion over Native American spiritual beliefs, while coming to a profound love and respect for the individuals and the tribes he has come to serve. It is a truly remarkable film, magnificently photographed, with rich, memorable characters. It speaks clearly about the conflicting values and world views held by these two cultures without denegrating or idealizing either one. There is violence and sexual situations — similar to what you might expect in “Braveheart.” A great film!

The newly-remastered picture is so much clearer and more vivid than the original release and the DTS soundtrack is an awesome addition. After having heard it, I would’ve bought it for the DTS, alone. Who knew that a 17-year-old movie could be remastered to DTS quality and 6.1 surround so well (including very targeted use of the rear channels).

The extras are another story, as many people have stated. The “Lockdown on Main Street” is a thoroughly one-sided political statement. If it should be anywhere, it should be on PBS, not on an action movie DVD. It feels like execs at Artisan were determined to put this documentary out there and picked “The Running Man” from their upcoming catalog as the best suitor.

The “Game Theory” documentary is just a piece in which creators and participants of reality TV shows pat themselves on the back for their popularity. Perhaps fans of reality TV would find it interesting, but I didn’t.

In summary, the new remastering of the movie is “special,” but nothing else on either of the discs is. As someone else said, buy it for the movie. The extras may make my stomach turn, but the movie is one of the best remastering jobs I’ve ever seen.

In this wry and entertaining take on a world gone crazy, where corporate rulers routinely engage popular sport activities to distill public anger and frustration and to try to distract common people from civic unrest, we find perpetual everyman Arnold Schwarzenegger caught in the vise-grip of official lies when he escapes from maximum security prison only to be caught and selected as the latest “contestant” (read `intended victim’ here) for the overwhelmingly popular television program called, appropriately enough, “Running Man”. The point of the game is for the contestant to survive being hunted down by a sewerful of villains while trying to make his way through a nightmarish maze. The villains are a bit campy, ranging from an outrageously garbed electric man who dispatches virtual lightning bolts to fry his prey out of existence to a chainsaw freak who attempts to hack his victims to death while riding his motorcycle.

Yet the action sequences more than make up for the sometimes-silly dialogue. The supporting cast is composed of veterans like Richard Dawson as the venomous game-show host and producer, who manipulates every aspect of the game to reach the storyline he has laid out. There are also a lot of cameos here, from Mick Fleetwood as a revolutionary to Jessie “The Body” Ventura as a sports commentator to Jim Brown as one of the slayers. The special effects are well done, and the action sequences provide plenty of vicarious violence for the moviegoer. Of course, Arnie has a waft of throwaway one-liners, and we know we are in the hands of experience when he tells Dawson the “he’ll be back”. Dawson, of course, not knowing whom he is dealing with, blows off the threat.

But the moviegoer knows Arnie will be back, and that he will win the day. This is not an intellectually satisfying film, but it is a good, sold action adventure based on an early story of Steven King’s that will keep you amused and entertained. It provided one of a series of sequential hits for Schwarzenegger, and helped to cement his reputation as a bankable superstar. Great stuff for wiling away a snowy winter day. Enjoy!

I gasp at the beauty of this film…the only way to describe it is to imagine a nature photograph of Edward Weston or Ansel Adams coming to life. The story is simple enough. A wild horse that runs free in the South of France is captured by some French “cowboys”, yet refuses to be tamed and breaks free. Despite several efforts of the cowboys to retrieve this pick of the horses, White Mane will only allow himself to be handled by a young boy - the son of a fisherman in harmony with nature. But it is not the story that makes this film sing…it is the combination of some of the most beautiful, lyrical images I have ever seen on the screen, the folk music of the South of France, and the very sparse narration in the French language. So therefore, it is a film where nature in the raw unfolds before our eyes…without distractions of unnecessary conversation or sentimental music.

Buy,Download, Or Stream White Mane! Click Here

A few words about the fighting among the horses. Everyone knows this is common to determine status and rank in the herd. That is reality…in the animal world and, alas, in the human world also. What the film does is depict “White Man” as he truly is, wild. untamed, and even a little brutal.

This is poetry in film, plain and simple. This is allegory. And it is even ballet as the music - when it is played - is coordinated so perfectly with the movement of the cowboys or the horse. If you are someone who finds joy in watching a jackrabbit scampering along the cracked earth with a wild stallion accompanying his rhythms, then this is the film for you.

I saw this movie very many years ago, and the magic remains. Albert Lamorisse crafted a simple tale, almost without words, of a fisher-boy in France’s Camargue region, and his love for the wild white stallion whose independence and freedom is threatened by man. The black and white photography is luminous, dazzling with its intense beauty. And the film’s ending will stay with you forever.

Buy,Download, Or Stream White Mane! Click Here

Criterion is releasing on two separate DVDs two short movies by Lamorisse shot around the same time — this one, and the better-known ‘Balloon Rouge’ or ‘Red Balloon’, made a handful of years later. Such a shame these two films, which total just 90 minutes together, could not have been released together on just one disc. ‘Crin Blanc’ is the finer of the two. It is a film for all people, of all ages.

There have been so many Pooh-related feature films, direct-to-video films and television series that it’s getting difficult to keep track of them (word is that there is another theatrical feature in the works). To the best of my recollection, “The Tigger Movie” was produced by the television division but was very successful in its theatrical release and was followed up with “Piglet’s Big Movie.”

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Tigger Movie 10th Anniversary Edition! Click Here

This is actually quite a nice film. The amazing thing about these characters is how flexible they are for so many stories. The plot here revolves around Tigger’s family background and his search for his “family tree.” The animation, apparently done in Japan, is very fluid and suggestive of the earlier films — and the domestic artists behind it are among the best in the business, including Floyd Norman and Toby Bluth.

John Fiedler, as Piglet, is the one remaining cast member from the original films, with Jim Cummings voicing Pooh and Tigger and none other than John Hurt taking over the narration from Sebastian Cabot.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Tigger Movie 10th Anniversary Edition! Click Here

It sure is nice to see “Songs by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman” in the credits. This was technically their last film for Disney, though its success surely should have resulted in others. My favorite of their songs is “Round My Family Tree,” but they all have the delicate charm of their other Pooh songs. They also collaborated with Kenny Loggins on “Your Heart Will Lead You Home,” which got a lot of airplay.

The DVD offers a handful of bonus features — several games, mostly, plus a storybook version read by the great Corey Burton and a digital copy. But it is particularly good to see two short episodes from the Emmy-winning “New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh” series. Each episode relates to the plot of the feature. Wouldn’t it be great if the series was packaged season-by-season on DVD? Hmm?

“Mostly I’m happy… but now all at once I feel so lonely,” sings a uncharacteristically melancholy Tigger in this year-2000 theatrical film, after his Hundred Acre Wood pals finally reject his manic bouncing behavior. Determined to track down “someone like me,” the irrepressible stuffed tiger has several adventures. He eventually learns that family members come in all shapes and sizes, and not necessarily from the same family tree.

Compared to most Disney sequels “The Tigger Movie” has a lot to offer. It’s sweet, with absolutely no hostility, and no more violence than a few bee stings. The animation is surprisingly good — a hallucinatory revue of history’s greatest Tiggers in references to The Brady Bunch, the “Jackson 5ive” Saturday morning cartoon series, Jerry Springer, The Seven Year Itch, even 1930s Gold Diggers films — while backgrounds often retain the soft watercolor look of the classic Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. For the most part Tigger’s sunny enthusiasm is on full display, as are his absoposilutely twisted takes on the English language. All the other classic Pooh characters appear too, including Winnie the Pooh, Rabbit, Piglet, Eeyore, Owl, Kanga, Roo, even Christopher Robin.

The voice talent is good, though the only voice from the original film is John Fiedler as Piglet. Both Tigger (originally Paul Winchell) and Pooh (originally Sterling Holloway) are voiced by Jim Cummings, recognizable to Playhouse Disney fans as the voice of Pete on the series “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.” The narrator (originally Sebastian Cabot) is voiced here by John Hurt, who portrays Mr. Ollivander in the Harry Potter films as well as Professor Oxley in 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

In short, “The Tigger Movie” is the best of Disney’s Pooh sequels. Preschoolers will especially love it, and though the oddball story line has some obvious plot holes (stuffed animals have birth parents?), parents can sit through at least one viewing with relative ease.

P.S. Want another good Pooh sequel? Check out Pooh’s Heffalump Movie.

P.P.S. Fans of Walt Disney World will want to watch that Tigger revue closely. The band playing at the family reunion is a Tiggerfied version of the Five Bear Rugs, the stars of the Country Bear Jamboree.

This is by far the best version of Huckleberry Finn. I’ve tried for the past 5 months to find this in DVD format in it’s 214 minute glory, and finally have found it from Monterey Media. This version holds true to the book in it’s unedited version and surpasses any other Huck Finn version in existance. I wish that the now defunct American Playhouse would have made Tom Sawyer to compliment this video. Maybe one day someone will.

Content of this film is better than any other Huck Finn version. Aside from just a few scenes, the film is really true to the original text novel. The only thing that is a pain is that the dvd has no chapter or scene separations. Showing it to high school classes is difficult due to the constant rewinding and fast forwarding to find where we left off.
